2 years and 5 months. I am proud that both Kyle and John are a part of the CrossFit family too. Other accomplishments include pull ups and box jumps without the double jump.

My favorite elements are the body weight exercises. I like it when there is a variety and I can use my cardiovascular conditioning and not have to rely on my strength. I also like Kettlebells and double unders.

How has CrossFit changed your life?

I have made some great friendships at CrossFit and really enjoy the people I work-out with! I am stronger and my strength is better balanced for all kinds of activities. Before my posterior chain was weak from running and being unbalanced physically can lead to all kinds of problems.

Coaching! I also enjoy the variety and the personal challenge of doing my best each WOD.

Andy Jozelic

What is your sport/fitness background/experience?

I tried a lot of sports when I was younger, but in high school I swam for Elk River and a local swim club from 7-12th grade year round. I also did some amateur competing in waterskiing for a couple of years.

Favorite recreational sport:

My favorite recreational sports are waterskiing, wakeboarding, and snowboarding.

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

I have been doing CrossFit for a year and a half. I started with two boot camps because I had no idea how to Olympic lift and it can be intimidating at first.

Favorite CrossFit element:

My favorite CrossFit movements are Clean and Jerk and rope climbs. They are the first things I felt ok doing during workouts.

Least favorite CrossFit element:

My least Favorite is Kettlebell swings having stiff hamstrings and not being very flexible makes doing them hard.

Biggest accomplishment(s) that you are proud of:

Competing in the open this last year, which if you are on the fence about doing, don't be it is fun. I am also proud of sticking with going three times a week, pretty religiously for over a year.

CrossFit Goals:

Goal one is I would like to achieve a bar muscle up. Goal two try not to get frustrated when my lifts don't go well and work on technique for them. Goal three is keep a good attitude and give my best effort because that's two things I can control.

Introduction to CrossFit:

My best friend, Tony brought me to bring a Friend Day at his box to give it a try. I had seen the CrossFit Games on T.V. and thought it looked fun to try out. I had been working out on my own and had not really gotten anywhere. At Bring a Friend Day, I was already tired after the warm up and the workout was harder. The workout was an EMOM of slam balls, wall balls, running, assault bike, and burpees. I had never worked so hard since swimming, the next day I started looking for a box of my own and quit the gym I had been going to.

How has CrossFit changed your life?

Well, the second reason I joined CrossFit was because my sister got sick and needed a kidney transplant. During the testing to see if I was a donor, I found out I was not really as healthy as I thought. After the initial testing for the boot camp, I found out my estimated age was 59. Thankfully, she was able to get a kidney from our dad but it made me realize I was only thirty and need to take a little better care of myself. I'm stronger and in better health than I was before, and hopefully continue getting better.

What do you like best about CrossFit Elk River?

It is kind of the generic answer that all CrossFitters give but it's the people and community. Everyone is super nice, it's not like going to a regular Gym where you throw in your headphones and hope no one talks to you. Even though they might beat you by a rep or a few pounds on a lift, we like to see our fellow members do well.

Favorite CrossFit Personal Records - PR's?

My favorite PR's I just hit last week were 185 on my power clean and 125 on my power snatch.

CrossFit Goals:

I would like to be able to do handstand pushups. I also want to get faster at the cardio workouts. I want to have confidence that I can do things and that I am a strong person.

Introduction to CrossFit:

Mike made me go to CrossFit one night to check it out. He was interested in joining and I was not. I was happy doing my own thing at Anytime. We walked into Steph and John doing split jerks and right there I wanted to turn around and walk out. It was very intimidating and all I thought is, 'yeah, right?! I am never doing this No way!' Well, Mike offered to pay for the first 3 months so I thought I would give it a try. My first day, we did front squats from the rack. I have never lifted a bar in my life, so I had no idea what I was doing. I put a little weight on each side and tried to pick the bar up. I didn't have cuffs on the bar so one weight fell off and then the other one. oops! How embarassing. Two years later, I love CrossFit and can't imagine my life without CrossFit and the friends I have gained.

How has CrossFit changed your life?

I am the healthiest that I have ever been in my life. I have always been the wimp in the family and now I am considered one of the strong ones. I am a happier person and more confident. The best shape I have ever been in, also.

Next came the Chicago Marathon and I qualified in 3hrs 38 minutes, year! I had to wait to do the Boston a year and a half later. I decided to run another Grandma's Marathon and again qualified. My P.R. for the marathon was 3hrs 31 minutes. The next year I ran the Boston in 4hrs 9minutes!! My running partner and I decided we would enjoy this marathon since we worked so hard to get there. I enjoyed the movements, the way my body felt and the way it changed my whole outlook on food and health. How has CrossFit changed your life?

CrossFit has changed my life dramatically. I am healthier, confident, happier and just an overall better attitude on life. I never would have thought CrossFit would change my life so much when I started. I learned so much about myself and have found a place to call home. I do this to keep myself balanced. I do this to show my three daughters you can do anything and it is okay to be strong on the inside and outside.

Where do I start?! I love CrossFit Elk River. I have learned so much from out Coach Chris! He has changed my life in so many ways and has taught me so much about myself. Jay Anderson

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Jay Anderson and am 49 years old. I joined CrossFit about three years ago. I was about 50 pounds overweight, had poor posture and declining health.

What is your occupation?

Small business owner.

Tell us something we don't know about you.

I have a Class A CDL license.

What is one belief or behavior which has most improved your life that you would share with others?

It is deeper than nutrition, strength building or fitness which have all been dramatically improved. The most improved aspect is my discipline. To experience the excellent results I've obtained allowed me to understand this is the result of my day-today actions. Applying this lesson to other areas of my life has been the largest improvement.

What is your fitness background?

I have been an athlete and have competed in sports most of my life. Although not in good physical condition since my 20's.

How did you feel before walking through the CFER door for the first time?

I was excited to give it a try but also a bit intimidated because there is so much I did not know. Now I realize that is OK and I learn something new every day.

What did you think after completing your first CrossFit workout?

It felt good and I wanted to do more.

How important is our community to you?

The members of the box are truly a big part of my life I am proud to call the fellow members my friends.

What keeps you coming back to class?

Enjoy the workouts, the coaches, my friends and the results. It is awesome to see the success others have.

How has CrossFit Elk River changed your life?

I lead a very healthy lifestyle and fully believe I'm going to be on this planet for a very-very long time. This is something I could not say prior to CrossFit.

Do you have any special or successful CFER memories/moments?

There have been an unending amount of PR's and goals met and exceeded. The few special memories though are ones of camaraderie and encouragement amongst the members.

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone considering CrossFit?

Don't be concerned about what you can't do, but rather what you can. CrossFit is a great choise for anyone who wants to improve their life.

What is your future CrossFit, fitness or health goal?

To be healthy and walking (ok running) on this planet at 100 years old. Plus a few competitions (CrossFit and other sports) throughout the journey.

Michelle Schroeder

Tell us a little about yourself.

I am a 53 y/o mom of 4 grown children. Yikes, did I just say that?

What is your occupation?

My career lends to a lot of interesting conversations. I sell a female urination device which allows women the opportunity to void standing up.

Tell us something we don't know about you.

Something secret- soooo many things, but few I am willing to share. LOL. I have ADD, so CrossFit works perfectly for my brain. Fast, hard and on to the next thing.

What is one belief or behavior which has most improved your life that you would share with others?

Grace. I think this is the biggest thing that I have gained throughout my years. We are all imperfect souls, however we are given an opportunity every day to embrace each other's differences.

What is your fitness background?

I have tried every form of fitness I could get my hands on. I ran for years when I had young children. I jumped on board the step aerobics band wagon for its run. Kick boxing. Zumba, despite my lack of rhythm. Spin class. Road biking. Tabata. Boot camps. Body pump. Swimming. Weight-lifting. CrossFit (obviously my favorite) and most recently mountain biking.

How did you feel before walking through the CFER door for the first time?

I have always lacked physical self-confidence, so walking into a CrossFit gym was overwhelming and intimidating. I mean this is tough stuff, can I really do this?

What did yyou think after completing your first CrossFit workout?

After my first workout I was exhilarated. I was reassured that this is where I belonged. I could see the commitment of all the members to improve themselves, the support and inclusiveness was evident.

How important is our community to you?

CFER doesn't have just a community, it is truly a family. It is important to surround yourself with like-minded people to help you achieve your goals in life and fitness. This family is beside you every step of your journey!

What keeps you coming back to class?

CrossFit is my drug. I come back for the endorphin rush. There is just NO feeling like the one you get from a great workout and the camaraderie of your teammates. It is my drug.

How has CrossFit Elk River changed your life?

CFER has changed my world. It pushes me harder than I had ever been pushed. I have learned better and safer techniques. New movements and the targeted muscles. The role of nutrition and sleep in my quest to become a better athlete.

Do you have any special or successful CFER memories/moments?

I would have to say a big CFER moment is the Open. From the first time Chris talked me into doing the Open to my most recent, the steps I have climbed has been exciting. To be able to say that I am in the top 1.5% of women world wide in my level/age is something I never thought possible. Thanks Chris for the encouragement to try something new!

What advice would you give to a newbie or someone considering CrossFit?

The idea of CrossFit can be overwhelming at first. Be patient, it only takes a minute and it will change your life. You can only be better than you were before!

What is your future CrossFit, fitness or health goal?

My goals moving forward are to continue to refine my eating. To increase my muscle mass and decrease my body fat. To work harder on the movements I am not strong in. To learn to "like the bike". Strive to be bigger, better, stronger, faster! To empower those around me to grab the most they can out of life!... then reach for more.

I'm a bald, married, middle aged father of 4 kids, ages 21, 19, 16 and 14.

Tell us something we don't know about you.

I love working on my cars and watching podcasts on Physics and Astronomy. I love to keep learning.

What is your fitness background?

I started doing a lot of cycling once my daughter was about 4 years old. I found it helped control the amount of stress in my life and keep me much healthier and happy.

How did you feel after your first CrossFit workout?

It was completely different than anything I had ever done before. I had never done any Olympic lifts so I found that part intimidating.

Do you have any special or successful CFER memories/moments?

When after 3 years I finally figured out kipping pull-ups! It was a game changer for me and it helped give me the confidence that even for as old as I am, I could make significant improvements.

What results have you seen so far?

I’m definitely much stronger and in better overall shape. Not just cardio strong, or one group of muscles, but all around strong. Also, my wife can’t keep her hands of me. 🙂

Just keep walking through the door and get to know the people around you.

Do you have any future CrossFit goals?

To just keep coming back and push off the aging process as long as possible.
